SUMMARY:  The Police Explorer Volunteer Program serves the following purposes:

A.   To allow individuals between the ages of fifteen and twenty an opportunity to explore the field of law enforcement and learn about law enforcement through training classes and firsthand experience.

B.   To promote the concept of law enforcement in the community through citizen participation.

C.   To provide training in a variety of law enforcement topics so that the members of the Post may be of assistance to Fort Collins Police Services and the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

A.   All Explorers may be utilized for a number of duties such as, but not limited to the following:

  • Crime prevention projects
  • Department tours and talks
  • Delivery of City Council Agenda Packets
  • Traffic control and direction at SWAT calls
  • Duties in the Records Division as approved by the Records Manager
  • Answering phones or doing other administrative duties
  • Parades and other special events

B.   All Explorers may also be involved in special projects initiated at the request of members of the Fort Collins Police Services.

C.   Explorers are afforded the privilege of doing ride-alongs with patrol officers, under certain requirements and restrictions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  This job has no supervisory responsibilities.


QUALIFICATIONS:  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

1.) Must be a citizen of the United States by either birth or naturalization, or lawfully in the United States and legally authorized for employment within the United States.

2.) Must have vision and hearing sufficient to perform the essential job functions and meet all minimum physical, medical and mental standards for the position applied for with or without reasonable accommodations.

3.) Must possess a valid driver’s license or minor instruction permit if driving is a job requirement for the position applied for.

4.) Must have the ability to speak, read and understand English.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Must have a high school diploma, GED, or be currently enrolled in a national or regional accredited organization recognized by the United States Department of Education with a minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4 point scale.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid  driver's license or minor instruction permit.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The volunteer frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The volunteer is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell.  The volunteer must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a volunteer encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.  The volunteer is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The volunteer is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
